3 Freak Accidents Covered by Auto Insurance

3 Freak Accidents Covered by Auto Insurance

You’ve been driving for years now; your driver’s license picture is at least fifteen years old! But (snaps fingers) you still got it!

By some miracle, you still haven’t found yourself the victim of an auto accident, knock on wood. You come to a full stop at stop signs, slow down at every yellow light and give cyclists and pedestrians the right of way with a smile on your face.

No matter how diligent a driver you are, there will come a day when you’re involved in an accident. This shouldn’t read as a curse on you and your car; statistically, you’re going to be involved in an accident every 17.9 years, whether you’re the driver found at fault in the accident or not.

But don’t worry: your auto insurance will cover you, even in the weirdest of accidents. That last sentence might read strangely. Wait, you think. What kind of weird accidents? What’s a weird accident?

Guess what? I’m going to tell you. Are you ready? Well buckle up, things are about to get weird and educational!

Flying Mattress on the Freeway

Back in Washington in 2011, a couple was zipping along the freeway with a mattress slackly tied to the top of their SUV. The high speeds, wind and slack rope were no match for the weight of the mattress, and it flew off the roof and into traffic, causing a three-care pile up.

The driver pulled over and she and her passenger exited the vehicle to retrieve the mattress. Realizing the amount of vehicle damage, they had caused, the driver jumped back in the SUV and took off. Leaving her partner behind and good Samaritans who had pulled over stunned. Getting back into their own cars, one of the good Samaritans spotted the passenger of the SUV hiding in the backseat, a tousle ensued. The man and woman (the owners of the flying mattress) were apprehended and charged.

Uninsured motorist protection would protect you against flying mattresses. Need a quote? Compare auto insurance quotes with sites like CoverHound, you’re guaranteed to find what you need.

Did an Asteroid Take Out the Dinosaurs? It Can Take Out Your Car

Despite what we tell ourselves, life is out of our control. We can be the most responsible, caring, and fastidious people we know, but accidents still happen—regardless of how careful you are.

Imagine that after having washed and waxed your car, you leave it in the driveway when you go in the house to grab a drink; washing and waxing a car is thirsty work, after all. You hear a loud crash outside and your car horn is honking erratically. There is what can only be described as a smoking rock embedded in the backseat of your car, your car’s rooftop looks to have broken its fall. Yep, an asteroid fell from the sky and collided with your car.

Will auto insurance really cover this freak accident? It sure will! USA Today reports that “if debris from asteroids, meteors or orbiting satellites ever hurtles toward Earth and onto your car, your auto insurance policy can cover the damage.”

What luck, huh?

Those Pesky Pet Drivers!

Though you should always secure your pet in the car in a travelling crate when you’re going for a drive, not everyone does.

A woman driving a collector car had her cute terrier pup in her lap when she became so distracted by his cuteness that she pumped on the accelerator and drove her 1958 convertible into another of her collector automobiles. Forbes writes that the woman’s auto insurance covered the damages to her two cars and the garage wall she took out in the process.

Was it doggone good luck? No, it was great auto insurance!

Protect you and yours today: get auto insurance, you never know when a freak accident could strike!
