NARAL Statement Regarding Komen Foundation and Planned Parenthood

Below is a statement issued by NARAL Pro-Choice America, a Washington, D.C.-based organization of pro-choice women and men across the United States who are committed to protecting a woman’s right to choose, regarding the decision by the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation to discontinue funding of Planned Parenthood.

Washington, D.C., February 1, 2012 – Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, issued the following statement regarding the Susan G. Komen Foundation’s decision to discontinue providing grant money for cancer screenings at Planned Parenthood.

“We stand with our allies at Planned Parenthood who provide basic health care, including cancer screenings, to so many Americans who otherwise would not get these services. The Komen Foundation’s decision to withdraw its support for life-saving care for women is a wake-up call for Americans. The same extreme groups that are using the legislative process to take away health care for women are now waging similar attacks against non-profit groups. We will not allow this campaign against Planned Parenthood to go unanswered—and will continue to counter these extreme groups every step of the way.”
