Today is Jennifer Jason Leigh’s 50th birthday. The Hollywood, California native has been in the entertainment business for more than 40 years, working on her first film at the age of nine. She comes by acting honestly – her father was an actor and her mother was a screenwriter.

Leigh’s breakout role came in in 1982, at age 20, playing the character Stacy Hamilton in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, which also served as a laughing pad for numerous other young actors including Sean Penn, Judge Reinhold, Forest Whitaker, Eric Stoltz, Anthony Edwards, Phoebe Cates and Nicolas Cage, as well as writer Cameron Crowe.

Wikipedia says Leigh “is known for her emotionally raw and often sexually explicit portrayals of vulnerable and damaged women, and for her intensive method inspired research into her roles.”
