The Things All Small Businesses Need To Know About SEO

If you are running a small business, then one of your main concerns is always going to be marketing. Knowing how to effectively market a small business makes all the difference. With proper marketing, you can be sure that your business will continue to grow at a healthy rate. There are countless methods and tricks involved in modern marketing. One of the most powerful of recent years is search engine optimization, or SEO. This is the shorthand term for a variety of techniques and methods designed to improve your website’s ranking with search engines. It is clear to any business owner how important that is, but getting SEO right is a real challenge. Let’s take a look at some of the things that you need to know in order to make the most of SEO.

A Mixture Of On-Site & Off-Site Is Best

There are many different ways of making SEO work for your small business. The amount of methods are increasing every year,  and it pays to know as many of them as possible. In essence, there are two main types of SEO – on-site and off-site. On-site SEO is basically just the process of making your website search engine friendly. This means making it so that search engines can more easily read and mine your website for its content which also includes your website loading speed – the faster your page loads, the higher you will rank on Google. Off-site SEO is about making sure your website’s ranking is improved, without directly advertising. The two most common methods here are links pointing toward your website from others, and social media marketing. The truth is, a combination of on-site and off-site SEO is needed if you want your website to really succeed.

Avoid Bad Links

There is a lot of discussion in the SEO world about what constitutes bad linking. Generally, this is when the links to your site are not actually of the calibre you want for your website. It is considered bad linking if it does not actually do you any favours with the search engine. This could mean that your ranking is damaged, or that your site was flagged through Google Penguin 4.0, or other subsequent updates. Either way, there are ways to avoid bad linking. The more you know about them, the better, so bear that in mind. Generally, it is wise to avoid links from sites with poor authority, as this can be picked up as a bad link.

Know Your Competition

SEO is one of those areas which is constantly adapting and growing due to competition. The competition is strong, and that is something of a mixed blessing. What it means for you and your business is that you should pay close attention to what your competition are doing. The more you know about what they are doing, the better you can make the right decisions for your own business. It is often the case that you will find out something your rival is doing differently which is actually putting them in good stead. Being aware of this means you can then jump on board and keep your business on track with the competition.
