CNN reports Marilyn Monroe has posthumously joined Twitter. She’s @marilynmonroe with her “verified account,” a program the social media firm does to identify authentic accounts of famous or high-profile people such as celebrities, politicians, actors and athletes.
August 5, 2012 will mark the 50th anniversary of Monroe’s death, so the Twitter account is managed by Authentic Brands Group, a marketing firm specializing in intellectual property which purchased the rights to all things Marilyn roughly 18 months ago. Authentic Brands Group has a dedicated social media team who will oversee the Twitter page of Monroe.
The estates of Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson and the family of Bob Marley have also attained verification by Twitter. While Monroe is at approximately 14,000 followers, Presley has over roughly 50,000 followers; the “King of Pop” has approximately 600,000, and Marley is ~150,000.
