Famous Women Use Their Fame for Good

Being a celebrity has its advantages. Celebrities can use their status to get VIP service at a restaurant or nightclub, get front row seats and backstage passes for a premier concert, acquire the best seats in the house for a sporting event or lock down the finest suite at a hotel when those rooms were originally booked. It is refreshing when the general public has a chance to see famous women using their notoriety to perform selfless acts specifically designed to help others.

Famous women have been performing acts of kindness for decades. Betty Ford was the First Lady of the United States when her husband Gerald Ford was the President of the United States from 1974-1977. Her resume in regards to being an advocate for different social issues is incredible. The 1974 mastectomy she had to undergo put her in a position afterward to raise breast cancer awareness to a new level. Her battles with alcohol addiction inspired her to open the Betty Ford Center for substance abuse and addiction, serving as the first chair of the board of directors. Betty Ford was a classic example of the wonderful work famous women can do in society.

Angelina Jolie has been one of Hollywood’s top actresses for years, capturing an Academy Award in 1999 for her performance in the drama Girl, Interrupted. She is one of the highest paid actresses in Hollywood, talented enough to star in dramatic movies such as Changeling and action movies such as Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. However, Jolie may be more well-known for her role as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and her willingness to adopt needy children from other countries. Famous women such as Angelina Jolie are proof that fame does not have to mean apathy in regards to less fortunate people.

Mia Hamm is perhaps the greatest female soccer player to have ever taken the field for the United States, having won multiple championships in the World Cup and the Olympics. She has also established the Mia Hamm Foundation to support patients and their families who benefit from bone marrow transplants and hosts an annual soccer game in Los Angeles to benefit this foundation.

These are just three examples of famous women that have used their fame to create opportunities to help others. Famous women that perform selfless acts such as these are women to be admired and respected!
