If you’re tired of the appearance of your living room and want to do something to make it better, fortunately for you – you can, and it doesn’t have to be as difficult as you might have thought, nor does it have to be as expensive either. Think of your house as a complex creature, and each room is a different emotion, but you are the one that decides what emotion it holds. So for example, your bedroom may stand for passion and love, while your bathroom may be nature inspired. But it really all depends on what you want to achieve, and how you fit your personality in with that.
You want to remember that your home isn’t just a place where you finish your day. It’s your own private nest that keeps you safe and secure. You build memories there with yourself, your friends, your family, and maybe even your pets. And it deserves some love and appreciation, because it isn’t just four walls that surround you – it’s your safe haven.
There are a number of ways that you can create the perfect mood and come up with some great decorating ideas for your living room, you just need to figure out what vibe you’re trying for first so that you know what direction to go in.
Here’s what you need to do:
Clean it out
The first thing that you need to do, is make sure that the room is as clean as can be, as there’s no point trying to decorate when there are piles of clutter in every corner. Clutter is a nightmare because it’s so easy to accumulate, and once it has, it builds and builds until the whole space is affected. Ideally, you wouldn’t have let it get that bad, but if you have, then you need to sort it out properly. That means deciding on whether you really need to keep all these things, or whether it’s just easier to throw them all out once and for all. If there are a few things of value in the pile though, don’t be opposed to selling them for a bit of pocket money. One man’s junk is another man’s treasure, right?
Choose a color
Choosing a color scheme for a room is one of the most important things you can do, because a color speaks a thousand words within the space of a few seconds, so never overlook the importance of this. This is where you really want to have a firm idea on the mood. If you want your living room to be warm, inviting, and relaxing, then chocolate browns and mochas work well for this. But if you want it to be bolder and in your face, then an apple red will pack the punch that you’re after. Or if you want a simplistic look, then monochrome is always a winner, painting some walls white, and some black, or even stripes of each down the walls.
Add the depth
The best way to create depth in any room, is by the lighting that you choose. But there are so many different styles out there that it can easily become a little overwhelming, but all you need to do is filter through your choices. Overhead beams will be rather harsh on a living room, that is why they’re often only used in kitchens because they are so bright and effective. But a living room doesn’t need that necessary clarity, especially not when you’re trying to unwind in the evening. A good idea is to have a basic source of light overhead, like a hanging light. But then have the addition of various lamps that are scattered around the room to give you subtle hints of a glow.
And the decor
Once everything else is done, you’ll want to think about the decor that will bring everything out. You can, of course, keep what you had originally, but you may want to swap in some new pieces to have the final look you were after. It can be as simple as adding a fluffy rug to the center of the floor that matches a secondary color that you have going on. Or you might want to get a new wooden coffee table that fits in better than your metal one. Having said that, it may be as minor as just switching the sofas around and putting the tv on the opposite side of the room. So have a play around until you find something you like.
