5 Tips for Joining the Gym for the First Time

Joining a gym for the first time can be nerve-racking, even for those who are in great shape and work out at home. After all, there are lots of people trying to get fit, just like you are, and that can make you feel inadequate if you are not in top shape.

Working out is one of the best things you can do for your overall health. You may want to try Club Fitness for a low-pressure, intense style workout that will help you achieve your healthy lifestyle goals.

Here are 5 tips for joining the gym for the first time:

  1. Don’t be Intimidated

No matter your size or shape, everyone is there for the same reason. There are going to be individuals that look better than you and that’s okay. Do not compare yourself to those people or anyone there. Everyone is on their own path, and it did not begin at the same time and will not end at the same time.

Do what you need to do to make yourself comfortable and healthy and don’t worry about what everyone else in the gym is doing. You are there for you, not the person across the room with all the muscles already in place.

  1. Bring a Lock

To keep your items safe and secure, bring your own lock for the lockers. A combination lock is better than carrying around a small key that may get lost out on the gym floor.

The best plan is to leave valuables at home or in the trunk of your car and only bring in the things you will need. A gym is a secure place, but you never know, and it is better to be safe than sorry.

  1. Invest in Good Shoes

You may not be a runner or even jump on the treadmill, but having good shoes for your workout day is important. You want to be as comfortable as possible and that starts with your feet.

You may want to wear your new gym shoes to the mall or grocery store a few times to break them in before taking them to the gym. And the idea is a comfort, not necessarily style.

  1. Do Not Use Your Cell Phone

It is best to keep your cell phone in your locker. It is rude to answer calls and talk on the phone while working out. If you are listening to your own music, that is fine, just don’t answer calls while doing so.

Try a new workoutYou will also need to be aware of your surroundings so having a cell phone on the gym floor is not recommended. You may not like the music choice of the day, but you will be considered a better gym member for being alert to others.

  1. Have Fun

You are at the gym for your health and to have a good time. Enjoy your time alone with the machines and weights as tools for becoming healthier.

This is your time to think about what you are doing to your body, what you eat and how much you work out or rest. It may be the only time you get for yourself all day and so that makes it important.
